A car that shakes when braking usually has brake discs with uneven thickness (often called "warped" discs), uneven pad material on the disc, or a sticking caliper. Worn suspension parts, a bent rim or a tyre problem can add to it. It is diagnosed by measuring the discs and inspecting the brakes and suspension, not by guessing.

- Steering wheel shakes when braking: front brakes or front suspension.
- Seat or whole car shudders: rear brakes or driveline.
- Shake only at high speed when braking: disc thickness variation or a wheel balance problem made worse by braking.
- Pulsing in the pedal: disc runout or ABS activating (which is normal on a rough surface).
The usual causes
- Disc thickness variation: discs wear unevenly, often after heavy braking on hills, and the pad grabs and releases as it rotates.
- Pad deposits: an uneven layer of pad material on the disc after hard stops or sitting hot with the brake held.
- Sticking caliper or slide pins: one pad drags, overheats the disc and wears it unevenly.
- Worn suspension: tie-rod ends, ball joints, control-arm bushes or wheel bearings let the wheel move under braking.
- Wheel and tyre: a bent rim after a pothole, a separated tyre belt, or wheels out of balance.
Jamaican roads make it worse
Steep descents, hot brakes and sudden stops accelerate disc wear; potholes bend rims and loosen suspension. On heavy European SUVs the effect is stronger. Fixing the brake fault without inspecting the suspension often means the shake returns.
Questions
Can warped discs be machined instead of replaced?
Sometimes, if the disc stays above minimum thickness afterwards. Many modern European discs are close to minimum by the time they warp, so replacement is often the sensible choice.
